Medical Marijuana Dispensary
The fight for marijuana just made progress. Now that Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana, the stage is set for more medical marijuana dispensaries around the country.
For all the controversy surrounding the legalization of marijuana, one thing is certain: for most of recorded history, marijuana was used primarily for medical purposes. The medicinal benefits of marijuana were first discovered by the Chinese. The first written record of marijuana was a reference made by Emperor Fu Hsi nearly five thousand years ago. He said that Ma, the Chinese word for Cannabis, possessed both yin and yang. The Chinese consumed medicinal marijuana for centuries though no one knows whether or dispensaries existed in ancient China. From there, it spread to Egypt, where it was used as a pain reliever for people with hemorrhoids. It wasn't until about 200 B.C. that marijuana turned up in the West, first showing up in Greece.
It would take another 2000 years before Jamestown settlers brought marijuana to the Americas. Famously, George Washington harvested hemp and according to records, he took particular interest in marijuana's medicinal uses.
It wasn't until the 20th century that the drug became known for recreational use. Controversy soon followed and politicians acted with force. The decades long war on drugs began. It wasn't until the following decades that states slowly allowed medicinal marijuana. Of course, dispensaries in California became ubiquitous. And then a huge moment: Colorado and Washington completely legalized marijuana. Now, not only medical dispensaries are all over Denver, but there are head shops that sell bubble hash to anyone.
